Overview of pre-service primary and lower secondary teacher training institutions and programs, and major in-service training initiatives in the G5 Sahel countries

The UCCD-UQAM was mandated to carry out an inventory of the initial and in-service training of primary and lower secondary school teachers in the five target countries, with the dual objective of gaining a better understanding of the current context and system of initial and in-service teacher training in these countries in order to prepare the ground for future training initiatives.

Impacts and social benefits

The first benefit is that the results of the study could become a decision-making tool for improving teacher training in the G5 Sahel. Data on the subregion is rarely updated. It could therefore be beneficial for the ministries of education of the countries concerned, but also for the program directors of the training institutions of the countries concerned. It could also be an input for potential international funding for specific programs to support teacher training in the countries concerned.

Impacts and scientific benefits

This study will advance knowledge of teacher training in the Sahel in a comparative perspective with respect to three main dimensions: initial teacher training, in-service training, and the integration of ICTs in these training programs. It will deal with the history of public policies on initial training, access routes to the profession, various training modalities and devices, program contents and approaches, and will also provide a review of the institutions involved by geographical area.

All projects
